Description:

Cimolichthys was an extinct saltwater fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. It was a small to medium-sized predator, averaging around 2 meters long, that likely fed on smaller fish and squid. In fact, remains of undigested fish and squid have been found in some fossils. Its closest living relatives are the Lancetfish and Lizardfish, but in life it would have resembled a large pike or a barracuda.  Fossils have been found from the Niobrara formation of Kansas, and it would have shared this habitat with other fish such as the predatory Xiphactinus, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, large prehistoric turtles and seabirds.
