Description:

Estemmenosuchus was a large species of Dinocephalian from the Perm region of Russia.  It is most notable for its bizarre ornamentation on its head, which gave it its name, the "Crowned Crocodile". It grew to lengths of 3 metres long and was likely omnivorous. Estemmenosuchus mirabilis had two sets of large horns which were most likely used for display rather than any fighting. Skin impressions have been found, and show that it was smooth, with no scales or hair. Some have theorised that this could indicate a semi-aquatic lifestyle for Estemmenosuchus, similar to the modern hippopotamus.
