Description:

Pentanogmius was a medium to large sized fish (4-6 feet) with a narrow, but deep body, somewhat like a modern angelfish. Its jaws had small, comb-like teeth. It lived in the late Cretaceous Niobrara formation, which was covered by the Western Interior Seaway, which split North America in two during the Late Cretaceous. Its most striking feature was its large dorsal fin, which it shares with other members of Plethodidae such as the more famous Bananogmius. It shared its environment with other fish, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, prehistoric turtles and seabirds.
