Description:
Protoceratops was a ceratopsian dinosaur found in Mongolia in the Djadochta formation, which dates to about 71 million years ago. Its name means 'First Horned Face' in reference to the fact that it was more primitive than later ceratopsians such as the famous Triceratops. In 1971 a fossil of a Protoceratops and Velociraptor locked in combat was found in Mongolia. It is believed that the two were fighting when they both died simultaneously, which could have been due to a sandstorm or from a sand dune collapsing on top of them.
