Description:
Protosphyraena was a genus of swordfish-like pachycormid that is best known from the Niobrara chalk formation. It was a fairly large fish, averaging around 3m long, and would have shared its environment with marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and mosasaurs, as well as other extinct fish. It was once believed to be a primitive barracuda, which is why its name means 'Early Barracuda'.
